Technology



Course Description
    This course takes place in a hands on computer lab and will teach students responsible and creative uses of technology. With the assistance of technology, students will develop an understanding of the five transition areas and resources available after graduation. Team building, organization, problem solving, planning, and school pride will all be emphasized throughout the course.



Work Skills 1

Course Description
    
In Work Skills class, students will explore personal and career interests and set goals. Students will gain experience in all aspects of employment, including career searching, developing a resume and cover letter, problem solving, interviewing skills development, networking, professionalism, and other such skills. This course will also cover procedures on the job, including responsibilities, benefits, evaluations, and job safety.
    This class will allow students to share and improve their work experiences through discussions of their past or present employment. Students will be introduced to various employment agencies and resources available to them in their community and on the Internets. Upon completion of this class, students will have a completed job portfolio for future reference.



Independent Living

Course Description
    
This course will prepare students for Independent life styles. It is designed to help students for living on their own. Emphasis will be placed on consumer decision making. Units of study include customer awareness, purchasing products, budgeting, comparison shopping, banking, evaluating billing statements, and steps for paying bills.



Community Access

Course Description
    
The course will be taught in classroom and community settings. It is designed to educate students on how to locate and use services in the community to become more independent in the area of daily living and prepare students with documents they will need in the future. The purpose of the class is to encourage awareness, exploration, and utilization of community resources as an integral part of developing and mastering essential life skills.


Communications
MY MOMMY SEZ I IS A GOOD KOMMUNIKATER
Course Description
    
This class will take place in both a classroom setting and throughout the school building. Students will be responsible for a variety of communication activities, including the production of a program newsletter, designing hallway and showcase displays, bulletin boards, and student recognition meetings.


Social Skills

Course Description
    
The Strong Teens curriculum will be used for this course. This curriculum is designed to promote social and emotional competence and the development of coping skills which will increase the students' abilities to handle stressors and other challenges of life. The students will be involved in a variety of activities, both individual written assignments and group participation activities.
Supplemental curriculi, such as Psychology for Kids and social skills games will also be integrated into the curriculum.


Home Living

Course Description
    
This class will take place in both a classroom setting and a real life setting school-owned apartment. The course will begin with a study of nutrition. Students will then have the opportunity to learn how to plan, shop for, and make simple meals. Students will also learn and practice general kitchen safety skills and apartment safety skills. Later in the course, students will learn about household finances clothing care skills, household maintenance, and personal care skills. A variety of resources will be used, including AGS Everyday Life Skills, Glencoe Teen Life, and Steck Vaughn Life Skills workbooks.
